Whitney Houston’s ex-husband, Bobby Brown, was as shocked as anyone when he heard about the singer’s sudden death. “I’m not the reason she’s gone,” he insists.

Brown sat down with the “Today Show’s” Matt Lauer for his first in-depth interview since Houston’s sudden passing at 48 on the eve of the Grammy awards, Feb. 11.

Lauer also interviewed three of Brown’s children and his fiancée about allegations that Brown played a role in Houston’s demise. The interviews will air Wednesday and Thursday.

For his part, Brown said he is “very much clean and sober from narcotics.” But he is still struggling with alcohol. The 43-year-old singer pleaded no contest last week to drunk driving after a March arrest.

Whitney Houston 911 Call Marked by Confusion

Brown reveals that he saw his ex-wife of 15 years a week before she died and recounts how she “had this glow about her that was just, you know, incredible. I’m saying to myself, you know, ‘She must be … she must be doing really well,’ because she looked really well.”

Houston was working on a comeback and had recently finished filming “Sparkle,” her new movie. She plays the mother of three daughters who go on to become pop singers. It focuses on the problems the face and is loosely based on ’60s supergroup The Supremes.

After Houston was found dead in her bathtub at the Beverly Hills Hotel, fingers were immediately pointed at Brown. The coroner’s report found cocaine and other prescription drugs in her system, although the cause of death was drowning.

Whitney Houston, What Could Have Been: Sparkle

“I was hurt. I was hurt … because, you know, me being off of narcotics for the last seven years, I felt that she was, you know, I didn’t know she was struggling with it still,” he tells Lauer, according to the show’s Web site.

What’s more, the widely reported belief that he got Whitney hooked on hard drugs is wrong. “I didn’t get high [on narcotics] before I met Whitney,” Brown said.

“I smoked weed, I drank the beer, but no, I wasn’t the one that got Whitney on drugs at all.” He says Houston was doing drugs “way before” they got together.

“It’s just … it’s just unexplainable how one could, you know, [say that I] got her addicted to drugs. I’m not the reason she’s gone.” Brown said.

Brown will reportedly undergo a 90-day alcohol education course as well as three years of informal probation as part of his sentence.
