Tom Cruise takes the biggest risk of his career. He works with kids, animals and Alec Baldwin in movie musical “Rock of Ages.” And, he sings “Wanted Dead or Alive,” according to a new trailer from studio New Line Cinema.
If this movie flops, Cruise will have to go to work in the circus. But the A-lister drew raves from director Adam Shankman for his portrayal of Stacee Jaxx, an ’80s heavy-metal hair superstar and frontman for the fictional band Arsenal.
Cruise’s character decked out in fur coats, bandanna, aviator sunglasses and leather pants is reportedly based on Guns ‘N’ Roses frontman Axl Rose. But he looks every inch like the ultimate rock star cliche, Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler.
The film, based on the Broadway musical by the same name, is a hilarious send up of the 1980s, when metal hair bands ruled the rock scene.
Catherine Zeta Jones, Paul Giamatti, UK comedian Russell Brand, R&B singer Mary J. Blige, who’s been there, and Julianne Hough round out the cast.
The love story centers on wannabe rocker Drew Boley, (Diego Boneta) and Sherrie Christian (Hough) who travel to Los Angeles to find fame and land on the notorious Sunset Strip.
The Strip is home to Dennis Dupree (Baldwin), owner of the failing club, The Bourbon Room. He’s counting on Jaxx to save the club by playing there.
“This place is about to become a sea of swank, ear-shattering music and puke,” says Dupree in anticipation of Jaxx’s appearance. “So, start drinking now.”
Stacy shows up in a white limo with his fierce monkey, “Hey Man,” in tow. The movie has so many scene stealers it’s going to be hard to top.
Zeta-Jones looks awesome as Bible-thumping Patricia Whitmore, who wants to shut down The Bourbon Room. Blige, Giamatti and Brand all have over-the-top roles.
The movie is also fueled by the music of such ’80s acts like Bon Jovi, Poison, Twisted Sister, Foreigner and Journey.
