Taylor Swift is rich, beautiful and talented: Why can’t she take a joke?

Taylor Swift has found out the hard way that success breeds contempt. A thin skin doesn’t help either. Ever since the Golden Globes when Amy Poehler and Tina Fey made fun of her dating habits, Swift has been under attack by comedians and haters.

It’s as if a dam broke when Poehler and Fey joked about her peripatetic love life.

Fey started it by wise-cracking that Swift should “stay away from Michael J. Fox’s son” and use “some me time to learn about herself.” The suggestion was obvious. Taylor was waaay over-reaching on the boyfriend front.

Then Poehler chimed in with a haughty sneer: “Go for it,” to laughs from the audience, which included the country singer, who wasn’t exactly laughing.

That was, or should have been the end of it.

But when Swift was asked during a Vanity Fair interview about her thoughts on the matter, she had a stinging reply. “There’s a special place in hell for women who don’t help other women,” she said, quoting Katie Couric, who uttered those words on an entirely different subject.

Is Taylor Swift Becoming a Pariah for Serial Dating?

Suddenly, Swift looked not only incredibly thin-skinned but also hypocritical. After all, hasn’t she made a fortune off the misery of her ex-boyfriends by writing thinly veiled songs about them?

Speaking of fortunes, she reportedly made $57 million last year, making her the third highest paid female entertainer behind Britney Spears and Oprah Winfrey, according to Parade magazine. So, get a life already.

She should be laughing all the way to the bank. Instead she appears sullen and spiteful. In any event her attitude and behavior have become a declaration of open season for comedians and bloggers.

“My theory about Taylor Swift is that she’s a virgin, that everyone breaks up with her because they date her for two weeks and she’s like, ‘I’m not gonna do it.’ And they’re like, ‘Oh, well, forget it,” said talk show host Chelsea Handler, 38, who should know. She’s slept her way through half of Hollywood.

Over the past four years, Swift has dated Conor Kennedy, Jake Gyllenhaal, John Mayer, Cory Monteith, Joe Jonas, Taylor Lautner and her latest, One Direction’s Harry Styles. They split in January. Each interlude has lasted about three months.

Swift has her own theory on the whole brouhaha.

“For a female to write about her feelings, and then be portrayed as some clingy, insane, desperate girlfriend in need of making you marry her and have kids with her, I think that’s… taking it and turning it and twisting it into something that is frankly a little sexist,” she told Vanity Fair.

Maybe so, but here’s one way to look at it. The whole uproar could have the benefit of bringing Swift back to earth. If she’s going to give it, she needs to learn how to take it the way it’s meant… as a joke.
