
Kate Upton goes where few models have gone before.
Christie Brinkley and Elle MacPherson are the only models to appear on the cover three years running. Brinkley made it from 1979 to 1981 and MacPherson appeared from 1985 to 1987.
Model Paulina Porizkova also appeared twice in a row. Cheryl Tiegs, Kathy Ireland and Daniela Pestova all appeared on the cover three times, but not consecutively.

Upton, 20, barely got a mention in the run-up to the release of the popular magazine issue, which hits newsstands on
Models Nina Agdal, Hannah Davis, the Victoria’s Secret fashion model who is dating New York Yankees slugger Derek Jeter, and Miss Alabama, Katherine Webb, were all mentioned as possible cover models.
But Upton, who scored the cover last year in only her second posing for the issue, aced them all with a stunning photo shoot in Antarctica. She’s topless with just a waist-length, white, fur-trimmed parka and some tiny white bikini briefs.
Upton sailed with her Sports Illustrated team on a ten-day voyage to the icy continent from Argentina. The magazine boasts that models were photographed on all seven continents.
Upton caused some controversy last year when she posed for the 2012 calendar because she was heavier and more buxom than previous models. But she blew right threw the criticism and shot to superstardom. She made a big move this year from bikini modeling to high fashion.
The editors of the magazine revealed their cover choice on Twitter after a scan of the cover leaked online. She’s being called “Polar Bare.”
