Tina Fey and Amy Poehler were totally the moment as hosts of the Golden Globe Awards. They treated the night with just the right touch of irreverence, humor and not a few biting comments, including a little riff on former host Ricky Gervais.
“Ricky Gervais could not be here tonight because he is no longer technically in show business,” Fey, 42, quipped.
With that, Poehler chimed in: “We want to assure you that we have no intention of being edgy or offensive tonight, because as Ricky learned the hard way, when you run afoul of the Hollywood foreign press they make you host the show two more times.”
But they gave Gervais, who was known for his barbed jokes, a run for his money.
The duo spared no one, including many of the female celebrities. “It was a great year for women in television. Lena Dunham (of HBO’s Girls) is double nominee tonight,” said Fey.
“But if they are forcing you to do all that nudity you have to tell us. Just give us some kind of signal and we will call child services.”

Even celebrity marriages weren’t out of bounds. “I haven’t been really following the controversy over ‘Zero Dark Thirty,” said Poehler about Kathryn Bigelow’s latest film. “But when it comes to torture I trust the lady who spent three years married to James Cameron.”
Anne Hathaway, who was up for a Globe for best support actress for her role in “Les Miserables,” also served as a host with James Franco of the 2011 Oscars. Their gig was disastrous, and didn’t go unnoticed.

“I have not seen someone so totally alone and abandoned like that since you were onstage with James Franco at the Oscars,” said Fey in reference to her role as the ill-fated Fantine.
Even the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which hands out the Globes, wasn’t off limits. “Amy tell the people a little bit about the HFPA,” Fey deadpanned.
“When left untreated, the HFPA can lead to cervical cancer. However, there is a vaccination…”
Former President Bill Clinton, who made a special appearance, was relegated to spouse. “Oh my God, what an exciting special guest. That was Hillary Clinton’s husband!”
