Mad Men actor Jon Hamm meant what he said when he call reality stars Kim Kardashian and Paris Hilton “fu*king idiots.” He also ripped the “cult of celebrity” that have made the reality stars rich.

Hamm made the remarks earlier this month in an interview with Elle magazine.

“Whether it’s Paris Hilton or Kim Kardashian or whoever, stupidity is certainly celebrated,” he said in the new April issue of Elle’s UK edition. “Being a f***ing idiot is a valuable commodity in this culture because you’re rewarded significantly.”

Later reports said the actor didn’t mean to get personal, and he was scolded by Kardashian, 31, who called his opinion “stupid.”

But Hamm, 40, wasn’t exactly apologizing when he said it wasn’t personal. “I don’t think [my comments] were careless. I think they were accurate,” he told Matt Lauer on the “Today Show.”

Hamm was on the show with the cast of the 60s era television show. Season five is nearing its debut after a 17-month hiatus.

“It’s a part of our culture that I certainly don’t identify with, and I don’t really understand the appeal of it, other than in a sort of car crash sensibility,” he said. “And it’s not something that I partake in or enjoy, but it is what is and here we are.”

“Mad Men” co-star Vincent Kartheiser also added his two cents worth. “Our society enjoys to turn on the television and see someone who’s maybe awful and they can say, ‘Well at least I’m not as terrible as that person.'”

“There are a lot of channels on the dials and those channels need to be filled up with things… It’s different strokes for different folks,” Hamm chimed in.

Of course, Kim should have just let the comments die with the news cycle. But she knows any publicity is better than no publicity. So she lashed back over Twitter.

“Calling someone who runs their own businesses, is a part of a successful TV show, produces, writes, designs, and creates, ‘stupid,’ is in my opinion careless,” she wrote.

Then she scold him on the need for respect. “I respect Jon and I am a firm believer that everyone is entitled to their own opinion and that not everyone takes the same path in life. We’re all working hard, and we all have to respect one another.”

Respect isn’t something Kim has gotten a lot of ever since she announced plans to divorce husband Kris Humphries just 72 days after their blowout wedding. Kris has sued for an annulment claiming the marriage was a fraud.

So far, they haven’t been able to resolve their differences.
