Daniel Craig is Mr. Summer Blockbuster. He’s teaming up with acting legend Harrison Ford and Sam Rockwell in the unlikely sci-fi movie “Cowboys & Aliens.” The Jon Favreau-directed epic looks like it will rock, according to a new trailer.

Craig plays Jake Lonergan, a cowboy who wakes up in a strange western town in 1873 Arizona, but can’t remember how he got there.

He bumps up against Colonel Woodrow Dolarhyde, played by Ford, an autocratic boss who runs the town of Absolution with an iron fist.

It’s a spooky enough place on its own. The townsfolk don’t abide by strangers, especially someone with a shackle around one wrist, who is wanted by the law. The fear is palpable.

But it only gets worse from there after the town is attacked by aliens, who snatch the townies and whisk them away in a flash of blinding light.

But Lonegran soon finds out why he landed in the town. He’s a gunslinger and holds a secret contained in the shackle that could give the town a fighting chance against the aliens, according to a plot summary.

Olivia Wilde plays Ella, a mysterious traveler who helps Lonegran lead a posse of his former enemies, townsfolk, Dolarhyde and his boys, outlaws and Apache Indians.

The key to the film will be how well Favreau unites the two genres without damaging the credibility of either or both.

“It’s about finding the intersection of those two genres… If you do it right, it honors both,” he told MSNBC.

“It becomes interesting and clever and a reinvention of two things that people understand the conventions of, instead of just a retread or remake or sequel or reboot of a film you’ve seen before.”
