Christie Brinkley is happy without a lover in her life, two years since her bitter, highly public divorce from her philandering husband Peter Cook. Instead she’s finding comfort raising her kids.

“Most of the time, I’ve got my kids with me, so I’m not as prone to meeting people,” Brinkley tells Prevention magazine. “And then, you never really know if someone is talking to you because you’re a celebrity.”

“It’s not my number one priority,” she explains about finding someone to fill the void.

Brinkley, 56, has three children – Alexa Ray, 25, Jack, 15, and Sailor, 12.

Alexa is with her first husband, singer Billy Joel and her younger children are from her marriage to Cook.

Since her wrenching divorce, Brinkley has remained relatively low key, although she was thrust into an unwelcome limelight when daughter Alexa tried to commit suicide last year.

The episode was more drama than life threatening; the drugs she swallowed were not dangerous.

But Alexa was clearly trying to send a message about the state of her life.

Although some fingers were pointed at Christie for being too demanding, Alexa later said she was simply distraught over the break up with her long-time boyfriend.

Brinkley acknowledges being a mother takes work.

“I always knew I wanted to be a mother … it takes a lot of work,” she tells the magazien.

“My work makes me a better mom. It gives me a little door to step out of my parenting and bring the excitement from that day back home.”

Cook painted an unflattering picture of Brinkley, accusing her of being cold, dismissive and unloving. That led, he said, to an affair with a 19-year-old assistant.

But Brinkley says she has put her bitter divorce behind her.

“You’ve got to find a way to keep laughing, even if it’s black humor, and my friends are very good at that,” she says.

“Some people think of happiness as a luxury, but it’s a necessity, and you need to make space for it in your life.”
