Scarlett Johansson, who has been on the wrong side of the #MeToo movement over Woody Allen, found a way to show her solidarity at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s annual fashion gala Monday night–she wore it on her back.
Her Marchesa gown was a sign of support for “two incredibly talented and important female designers,” she said.
One of the them is Harvey Weinstein’s long-suffering, now estranged wife Georgina Chapman.
“I wore Marchesa because their clothes make women feel confident and beautiful, and it is my pleasure to support a brand created by two incredibly talented and important female designers,” the actress said in a statement.
Scarlett said she personally ordered a dress for the event to fit the “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” theme.
The flowing burgundy gown gave Marchesa its first high-profile red carpet appearance since the Weinstein scandal broke in an avalanche of sexual harassment allegations last fall.
Celebrities have been boycotting the fashion house because the former movie mogul co-founded it to boost his wife’s career.
Johannson is a self-proclaimed feminist who isn’t afraid to step out of line on some issues.
The 33-year-old actress, called out James Franco at the 2018 Women’s March for alleged inappropriate sexual behavior, but she’s been silent on Allen, who has been accused of child abuse by his step-daughter Dylan Farrow.
Johansson has had no qualms about working with Allen on several films, such as 2005’s “Match Point,” which put her on the map. She also appeared in Allen’s 2006 film “Scoop” and 2008 film “Vicky Cristina Barcelona.”
She was the only actress who took particular umbrage with Dylan Farrow for calling her out in an explosive New York Times column, in which Farrow detailed her allegations against Allen.
