Elton John has touched off a social media storm with his claim that Christ would support gay marriage. He made the statement during a Sky News interview in the UK and caused Twitter to rain fire and brimestone.
“Our theology should not come from heathens,” thundered one religious critic.
A number of conservative publications and Web sites picked up the story and highlighted John’s remarks, touching off the Twitter fury.
During his interview, the conversation got started when John was asked about church rules prohibiting gay clergy from marrying and Catholic priests from having sex.
Here is John’s reaction:
“These are old and stupid things. If Jesus Christ was alive today, I cannot see him, as the Christian person that he was and the great person that he was, saying this could not happen. He was all about love and compassion and forgiveness and trying to bring people together and that’s what the church should be about.”
The singer married his long-time partner David Furness, in a civil ceremony.
Elton also fretted that the fight for gay rights was losing ground globally. He was specifically referring to Russia, which has enacted a draconian anti-gay law.
Romans 1:26-27: The Bible Speaks… Or Does It?
“For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, 27 and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error.”
But he may have to first shore up the effort at home.
“Someone send Elton a Bible,” wrote another critic.
“Romans 1:26-27. BZZZZT!!” wrote yet another.
Indeed. That passage of the Bible has most often been cited as God’s condemnation of homosexuality. But it’s also been subject to wide interpretation and questions about its translation from Greek to English.
