Billy Joel had a quizzical look on his face at first, but quickly caught on to Jimmy Fallon’s iPad duet of a doo-wop classic.

Billy Joel and Jimmy Fallon tapped technology to turn their duet into a four-part harmony to sing the classic song “The Lion Sleeps Tonight,” on last night’s tonight show. Pretty amazing!

Fallon, who has made music an integral part of his shtick, takes the Tonight Show to a new level and makes it his own in a snazzy rendition of the song.

With Joel in a guest chair and Fallon behind the desk, the late night host whipped out an Apple iPad and schooled the “piano man” in a little digital technology.

The iPad app creates a musical loop that allowed them to record the harmony parts to the song. Joel, a naturally gifted musician who never finished high school, picked it right up.

He called for the key of D, and Fallon started it off. They created a pretty amazing rendition of the song. Surprisingly it was originally recorded in 1939 as a traditional South African folk song.

A slew of artists including The Weavers, Jimmy Dorsey and The Kingston Trio covered it in the 1950s. But doo-wop group The Tokens made it a hit with their 1961 version, which Fallon and Joel sing.
