Robert Pattinson and Guy Pearce face off in the futuristic movie The Rover, which finally gets a release date.
The film, directed by David Michôd and co-starring Guy Pearce takes Rob in a different direction from his previous movies.
Rob plays Rey, a naïve gang member in a post-apocalyptic Australia where gangs rule. When the gang robs Eric (Pearce), Rob’s character is wounded and left behind.
He forms an uneasy alliance with Eric to help him track down the gang and get back his worldly possessions.
They shot the film in Nov. 2012 outside of Adelaide, South Australia, at a time when the region was locked in a deadly heat wave and was plagued by brush fires.
Rob has always said he hoped to play a wide variety of characters following his role as vampire Edward Cullen in five “Twilight” films. He particularly relished playing bad guys.
So far, he’s gotten his wish. He’s now played the bad guy in “Bel Ami,” “Cosmopolis” and now “The Rover.”
The first trailer for the movie was released in January. At the time, however, the film still did not have a release date.
But in a tweet from the official Rover Twitter account, the release date was revealed as July 18, in the middle of summer blockbuster season.
The film will be competing with Focus Features’ “Wish I Was Here” with Zach Braff, which goes into limited release in New York and Los Angeles before wider release Aug. 1, according to Deadline.
Also opening that weekend is “Jupiter Ascending,” from Andy and Lana Waschowski, best known for “The Matrix Trilogy,” “Speed Racer” and Cloud Atlas.” The film stars Channing Tatum.
